Aromachology or the psychology of scents

Return to the blog

Have you heard of aromachology?

It is often confused with aromatherapy, but although they are closely related and sound very similar, they refer to different things.

While aromatherapy is a therapeutic discipline that uses the properties of essential oils extracted from aromatic plants for beneficial purposes for the body, aromachology or the psychology of scents is the science that studies the psychological impact that smells produce: how aromas affect emotions, behavior, and the mind, ultimately.

In a previous article, we already discussed how the sense of smell is connected to the part of the brain that processes emotions. When we smell something, it becomes information that first goes to the limbic system and the hypothalamus. These are the areas of the brain responsible for emotions, feelings, instincts, and impulses, so it is normal to associate a scent or fragrance with a particular memory.

Aromachology links the temporary effects of fragrance on feelings and emotions through the stimulation of olfactory pathways.

Why are there smells we like and others we don't?

It makes sense then that some smells can change our mood. On the other hand, when we smell something, our brain associates that scent with a memory. So the effect a fragrance can have on each of us is highly subjective.

Just as certain aromas connect us to positive memories, there are also scents we dislike and don’t know why. It’s likely because they trigger painful or stressful memories, linked to past situations we prefer not to recall. Learning about aromachology can be helpful in choosing the ideal fragrance to create different atmospheres and enhance the activities we do in each space.

For example, in a work environment, citrus notes are ideal for keeping our brain alert and boosting creativity; while for a bedroom, those scents that promote good rest are recommended.
