Small gestures for a more sustainable world

Back to blog

Did you know that recycling an aluminum can would give us enough energy to light a television for hours? Or that every minute you pass in the shower equals about 20 liters of water? What a plastic bag takes 4 centuries to decompose completely? That the air conditioners emit carbon dioxide to the atmosphere due to its large electricity consumption, so they aggravate global warming?

They are data that, without a doubt, does not leave us indifferent. They remind us that many of the daily actions we do can affect our planet, either on the environment or about the people who inhabit it.

Once the problem is aware, the logical thing would be to modify our daily habits to try to follow a more sustainable life. However, in practice we realize that this is not always so simple and that giving up according to what behaviors or actions is not an easy task.

Because?

First, we must remember what to know is not to act. So having knowledge about something does not mean that we start a routine with it.

In addition, we tend to relativize the importance of good habits and minimize the consequences of not carrying them out. That is, although we know the benefits of an action, it is not enough to execute it.

We also fall into the trap to postpone the beginning of a routine telling us "I start on Monday" or "I put myself at the beginning of the month", instead of "the best moment is today, here and now."

When we introduce changes in our life, however good they are and desire to have, you need some time to assimilate them. This time (variable between some people and others), is because we generally change inside, we become aware of what and why we change and carry it out means many times having to leave our comfort zone in which we feel so comfortable. Modifying actions and thoughts requires concentration and self -control, which leads to spending more energy, so we can feel more tired both physical and mental.

Nobody said that modifying behaviors was easy ... so it is necessary to believe that it is worth it, to want that new challenge, do not throw in the towel in the first difficulty. With these doses of conviction, motivation, illusion and constancy we can enjoy more and better to achieve the desired changes.

And ... How can we act for the benefit of sustainability?

Inside the house, we could start by keeping the temperature at about 20ºC in winter and 26ºC in summer. In the kitchen, for example, much of the utensils we use are plastic, we could dare to replace them with recycled or wood -free glass products without varnishes. Another good option would be to control the shower time and dental brushing, closing the tap when the water is not necessary. We could also progressively replace halogen bulbs with low consumption systems. Of course, we cannot forget to recycle the waste in their corresponding containers.

Outside the home, we can choose to use reusable bags instead of plastic. When we buy food, we can consider starting buying certain bulk products and carrying our own reusable cotton bags. Have plants adapted to the weather on the terrace and garden. Try to go out with more time and move on foot instead of with the car or motorcycle ... in this way, in addition to being more sustainable, we give the body a bit of healthy movement.

Deciding to be sustainable is easier and less expensive than it may seem and entails great benefits for you and future generations. Each small action counts!
